About Us

History

The (Cork) Social and Health Education Project was established in 1986 to continue work that had first been initiated in 1974 by a number of teachers, health professionals and others who shared a concern about the short and longer-term effects on people of health-threatening choices made during childhood and adolescence. From the outset, the work of the Project was associated with the use of participative, experiential education as a means of fostering a capacity to make informed and responsible choices.

Over time, the innovative training of teachers to support young people led to the development of what is a unique and highly-regarded training programme for adults and communities in personal, social and health education. Whilst the training of teachers was gradually incorporated into a new, national Social Personal and Health Education (SPHE) programme in schools, it was clear that SHEP’s innovative work with adults met a real need.

The Project proceeded therefore to offer foundation training in social and health education to support adults from all backgrounds to develop greater personal awareness, confidence and capacity to contribute to family, community and society.

Later, facilitation training and specialised tutor training were developed for those who wished, either in the course of their professional work or by serving as community tutors to make a stronger contribution in their own communities. Over time, other areas of work – such as counselling and advocacy – were initiated to complement SHEP’s work in training and development. More recently, our embracing of International Partnership work, which is based on commitment to being outward looking and our solidarity with like-minded groups in other parts of the world, has added a very important global dimension to our work.

Mission and core values

SHEP envisions a world transformed into one that is compassionate, just, and fair, where the value we place on ourselves and others ensures each generation passes on a flourishing world to the next.

The World We Experience

We appreciate and honor the human creativity and diversity that have shaped our society. Simultaneously, we recognize the existence of a relational approach that at times disconnects us from our deeper selves, each other, and the world we inhabit. Furthermore, we acknowledge the prevalence of social and economic injustice, subtle and overt discrimination against those perceived as different, and a consumerist way of life that proves detrimental to the natural world upon which we rely.

And we also see...

a way forward in cultivating understanding, empathy, and interconnectedness, addressing the disconnection that impedes personal and societal well-being.

widespread social and economic injustice as an opportunity for advocacy and systemic change, striving for a fair and equitable society for all.

subtle and overt discrimination against those perceived as different as a call for fostering inclusivity, diversity, and respect in our communities.

an overly consumerist way of life as an impetus to promote sustainable practices, recognizing our responsibility to protect the environment.

Mission

In solidarity and partnership with others, we endeavor to enhance the well-being of individuals, families, communities, and the wider world, contributing to the establishment of a healthy, loving, socially just, and sustainable way of living.

What is important to us

A deeper awareness and knowledge of self: Acknowledging the significance of self-awareness as the foundation for personal growth and meaningful connections.

An ability to listen deeply and to feel compassion: Cultivating the skills of empathy and compassion to strengthen our relationships and understanding of others.

A willingness to speak from the heart and to relate with love: Encouraging authentic communication and fostering a culture of love and understanding in our interactions.

A concern for climate and social justice and an understanding of structural injustice: Recognizing the interplay between environmental and social issues and advocating for systemic change to address structural injustices.

A commitment to constructive action for a sustainable and socially just world: Translating our values into purposeful action, actively contributing to positive change on both local and global scales.

A felt sense of our interconnection with each other and with the whole web of life: Embracing the interconnectedness of all life, fostering a sense of unity and shared responsibility for the well-being of our planet.

A commitment to critical reflection, learning, and constructive action: Emphasizing continuous learning, reflection, and adaptability as essential components of personal and collective growth.

We are committed to cultivating in ourselves, and inspiring in others, the ability to be fully present, open, and compassionate in the world: Prioritizing mindfulness, openness, and compassion as guiding principles in our personal and collective journeys.

How we work

We engage with individuals, families, groups, and organizations to create a ripple effect of positive change.

We support people, organizations, and systems in learning and acting from deepening awareness: Facilitating processes that encourage a profound understanding of issues, fostering informed and purposeful actions.

We work in partnership with other organizations where possible: Collaborating with like-minded entities to amplify our impact and create synergies in our collective pursuit of positive change.

We bring ourselves and our full presence to the work: Emphasizing authenticity and commitment in all our endeavors, ensuring that our actions are aligned with our values.

We start with people’s life experience and support them in building on it: Recognizing and honoring the unique experiences of individuals and communities, and using them as foundations for growth and empowerment.

We use facilitative approaches to help people and groups to take constructive action: Employing inclusive and participatory methodologies to empower individuals and groups in their journey towards positive change.

We use active methods drawing on people's experience and creative imagination: Encouraging dynamic and creative approaches that leverage individuals' unique perspectives and imaginative capacities.

Building and maintaining supportive, non-judgmental, and inclusive relationships is central to our work: Prioritizing the creation of a safe and supportive environment that fosters growth, understanding, and collaboration.

Approach

We engage in a creative and inclusive manner, collaborating with individuals, communities, and systems, aiming to foster a deeper connection with ourselves and the world we inhabit. This involves not only understanding our internal landscapes but also gaining insights into the complexities of the external environment we navigate. By doing so, we lay the groundwork for meaningful interactions and relationships.

Additionally, we seek to inspire and facilitate positive change and growth at both the communal and individual levels. Our approach goes beyond mere motivation; we actively work towards cultivating capacities that empower communities and individuals to evolve positively. This involves creating spaces that nurture personal development and resilience, fostering a sense of agency in individuals, and contributing to the overall well-being of communities.

Furthermore, our commitment extends to contributing to the renewal of broader social, cultural, and economic systems that shape our world. We recognize the interconnectedness of these systems and aim to play a role in their positive transformation. This involves challenging existing norms, advocating for inclusivity, and participating in initiatives that promote sustainability and social justice.

Main Areas of Work

1. Adult Education & Training (especially experiential group-work)

In the realm of adult education and training, our focus lies in experiential group-work. This involves immersive and participatory learning experiences that go beyond traditional classroom settings. By emphasizing hands-on activities and group dynamics, we aim to create environments that foster collaboration, critical thinking, and skill development.

2. Community Development Work

Our commitment to community development goes beyond superficial interventions. We actively engage with communities, understanding their unique needs and aspirations. Through collaborative efforts, we aim to empower communities to be architects of their own development, fostering sustainable and inclusive growth.

3. Therapeutic & Counselling Services

In providing therapeutic and counseling services, our approach is rooted in empathy and understanding. We acknowledge the diverse challenges individuals face and offer a supportive environment for self-exploration and healing. Through personalized and culturally sensitive interventions, we strive to enhance emotional well-being and resilience.

4. Advocacy for Systems & Policy Change

Advocacy for systems and policy change is integral to our mission. We work towards creating a ripple effect by advocating for structural changes that address systemic inequalities and promote justice. This involves engaging with policymakers, raising awareness, and actively participating in initiatives that drive positive societal transformations.

Programmes

Reflecting the growth and development of Project over the decades, SHEP now has twelve programmes, each designed to address specific needs and contribute to holistic development:

1. Short Courses (community-based)

Community-based short courses provide accessible learning opportunities, fostering a sense of community and shared knowledge. These courses aim to equip individuals with practical skills and insights that can be applied in their daily lives.

2. Earth Aware

The Earth Aware program focuses on environmental consciousness and sustainability. Through education and practical initiatives, we aim to promote a deeper understanding of ecological interdependencies and encourage responsible environmental practices.

3. Foundation Programme

The Foundation Programme serves as a cornerstone for personal and communal growth. It lays the groundwork for individuals to embark on a journey of self-discovery, fostering a solid foundation for ongoing development.

4. On-going Personal Development

Ongoing personal development initiatives provide continuous support for individuals seeking to navigate life's challenges and pursue personal growth. These programs facilitate a dynamic and evolving process of self-discovery and improvement.

5. Training Facilitators to work in the Community

Empowering individuals to become facilitators in their communities, this program focuses on building the skills necessary for effective group dynamics, community engagement, and leadership.

6. UCC Diploma in Social & Psychological Health Studies

The collaboration with UCC offers a comprehensive diploma program, combining social and psychological perspectives to enhance knowledge and skills in promoting health and well-being.

7. Professional Development for Practitioners (including Reflective Practice)

This program caters to professionals seeking ongoing development in their respective fields. Through reflective practice, participants deepen their understanding and refine their skills, contributing to the overall quality of their work.

8. Training & Development for Organisations & Communities

Recognizing the importance of organizational and community-level development, this program focuses on enhancing the capacities of entities to create positive and sustainable change within their spheres.

9. Advocacy with Marginalised People and Communities

Advocacy with marginalized communities involves raising awareness, promoting inclusivity, and actively addressing the unique challenges faced by marginalized groups. This program seeks to amplify their voices and advocate for systemic changes that foster equity and justice.

10. Coisceim Low-Cost Counselling

The Coisceim Low-Cost Counselling program aims to make counseling services more accessible. By providing affordable options, we ensure that individuals from diverse backgrounds can access the support they need for mental and emotional well-being.

11. LIB Multicultural Counselling & Outreach

This program addresses the cultural diversity within our communities, offering counseling services that are culturally sensitive and inclusive. It aims to bridge gaps and provide support tailored to the unique needs of individuals from various cultural backgrounds.

12. International Learning Partnership (with Sahakarmi in Nepal)

Our international learning partnership with Sahakarmi in Nepal exemplifies our commitment to global collaboration. Through this program, we exchange knowledge, cultural insights, and strategies for community development, fostering cross-cultural understanding and solidarity.

In summary, our comprehensive approach, diverse areas of work, and tailored programs reflect our dedication to fostering positive change, promoting inclusivity, and contributing to the holistic development of individuals, communities, and systems.

Where we work

SHEP is an Irish organisation and we work in Ireland. Most of our work is in Cork, Kerry and the Mid-West. We now also work in some other counties, on a small scale, usually in partnership with locally-based groups and agencies.

SHEP also supports the work of our international partner, Sahakarmi Samaj, which works in southwest Nepal. This ‘Learning partnership’ links our work here in Ireland with an innovative and highly effective community mobilisation and support programme in Nepal.

The Project started in Cork in 1974 as an initiative of Ogra Chorcai and later became independent. The Project has been offering training in County Kerry since 1998, and the Project has grown considerably there over the years. A third phase of the programme in the Mid-West Region commenced in 2010: this programme has grown significantly in the region with the support of local partners. The Management Committee agreed in 2018 that we should continue to allow the Programme to grow incrementally and organically to new counties as new needs emerge.

New On-line Programmes

Our preference for training is ‘in-person’ training. However, the experience of COVID19 has shown us that some of our training can be offered in a blended or perhaps even fully on-line format. One of the advantages of this move has been that we have been able to include participants from a much wider geographic area across Ireland.

Board of Management

The Social and Health Education Project CLG is governed by a Board of Directors and a Management Committee. The Management Committee comprises people from a range of backgrounds including those who have undertaken training with the Project, those who are involved in programme delivery (e.g facilitators, counsellors, advocates) and individuals who are professionally involved in the fields of personal and community education or development.

Management Committee sub-committees

The Management Committee is supported in its work by four sub-committees:

  • Audit Sub-committee
  • Governance Sub-committee
  • Strategic Development (Generative Dialogue) Sub-Committee
  • Human Resources Sub-Committee.

Project Advisory groups

The Management Committee is also supported in its work by a number of project advisory groups:

  • Mid-West SHEP Advisory Group
  • SHEP Earth Aware Advisory Group
  • International Partnership Advisory Group
  • Training and Development Services Advisory Group
  • Coisceim Low-Cost Counselling Advisory Group
  • Cork Advocacy Service Advisory Group

Governance Documents

SHEP’s policy on governance is set out in CG001 SHEP Governance Policies & Procedures (2017).

Our financial policies are presented in CG002 SHEP Financial Policies & Procedures (2017).

SHEP complies with The Governance Code for Community, Voluntary and Charitable Organisations in Ireland. A review of our organisations compliance with the principles of the code was conducted in Autumn 2014.
